  • What is Monitor resolution?

Screen resolution, or monitor resolution is basically how big or small the elements appear on the screen. It is related to quality, definition.

The monitor/screen is measures in pixels. A pixel is the smaller unit.

As the technology evolves the definition gets better.

A few years ago the standard was 640 pixels wide X 480 pixels tall. Then the video boards got improved and the new standard came to 800 pixels wide X 600 pixels tall. Today, over 70% of users already have their monitors settled to 1024 pixels wide X 768 pixels tall.

The FlashToGo websites/interfaces were designed for 1024 X 768 or above, which is the internet today's standard, however the sites and interface can be accessed by those who still have their monitors settled at 800 X 600 resolution.

  • Are the interfaces designed to work at any settings, like 800x600 or other?

The interfaces were designed at 800 X 500 pixels, so it works great at 1024 X 768 resolution (by far the most popular resolution), at 1152 X 864 or even at 1280 X 960.

Above those resolutions (1600, 1920 etc) the interface will become a bit smaller on the screen, but those are still not popular (around 1%-2%).

At 800 X 600 (around 20%-25% of users, and rapidly decreasing), the interface fits almost entirely on the screen. A scroll will appear though.

The same applies to 640 X 480 (the user will need to scroll both horizontally and vertically), but such resolutions are very rare these days.

Specially because we are dealing with images, it is not advisable to escalate the site to fit the screen. Images and fonts often look bad when scaled. Even though you can set the website to fit 100% of the screen no matter the user's resolution. This option is available at the Editing Area of the FlashToGo. Some users prefer so.

Designing for the web is about making choices. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to design a site that may handle "any type of settings" :-)

  • Movie preferences: Scaled X Non-Scaled

The FlashToGo system provides you the option to set your movie appearance to either scalable or non-scalable. Here, we will discuss the differences.

When you set the movie to fill 100% of the screen (scalable), no matter the size of the browser window, the movie will adjust itself to that window size. We know it may sound appealling, and this is a great feature only Flash can provide, however you must observe a few aspects before you decide to go for that option.

The movie might be distorted. If the browser´s window is to "narrow", for example, all the elements on screen, including the type will be more condensed. If you have uploaded a logotype, it would also become distorted.

Some typologies simply do not look good when scaled. If you want to set the movie to fill 100% of the screen, test it and see if it looks acceptable to you.

By default, the sites ae settled to be non-scalable. That means they are being displayed at their original size (800 X 500 pixels).

If your monitor is settled at 1024X768 or above, you will see a surrounding area (like a frame). The default color for this area is light gray, pretty much the same color as the browser itself. This color can be customized as you like from the Editing Area (Page Details), right after you edit the Meta-tags of your site.

  • Our recommendation

Our recommendation is that you set the movie to non-scaled (default). The fonts will look crispy and all the elements on screen will never be distorted.

  • Page Color "surrounding" the Main movie

The default color for this area is light gray, pretty much the same color as the browser itself. This color can be customized as you like from the Editing Area (Page Details), right after you edit the Meta-tags of your site.

  • Can I alter the size/properties of the Pop-Up pages?

Yes, you can adjust the size of the POP-UP pages. The Pop-Up pages are those that pops when you click one of the external links.

Request the files to be sent via Email to you.

Open the main.htm page within a text editor. Notepad will do.

Look for a line that displays the following:

    newwin=window.open(winurl,winname,'height=480,width=640,top=100,left=150,status=yes,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,toolbar=no,location=no');

The pop-up window heigh is set by default at 480 pixels and the window width is set to 640 pixels. You may change that to a different size.

As you can see, you can also change the properties of the popup pages, such as showing the address bar and the buttons bar. You just only to change that to "yes" instead of "no".

The change will be set for ALL the pop-up pages at once.

    Important!

You should upload this page separately to your web server (where your site is hosted) using some third-party FTP shareware.

If you need info in regards to FTP (File Transfer) read the topic Publishing also in this section.

  • Images look blurry

First, you need to make sure the original image is in good shape. Drag it to an empty browser window and check for its quality.

Second, it is strongly recommended that you do not set the website to escalate to 100% of the browser's window. Even though we provide that option, it is not advisable to use it, since images and fonts often look bad when scaled.
